A girl festooned with balloons covers her eyes amid the ruins of the city of Grozny, capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya in the northern Caucasus. Chechnya spent much of the 20th century attempting to win its independence from the Soviet Union, and in the 1990s carried on the struggle with Russia. In 1994-96 it fought a largely successful guerrilla war against Russian forces, and won a large degree of independence.
